Thursday 30th March - San Sebastian (Donostia), Spain

Another good thing about camping in Zarautz is that it's just a short train journey from here into San Sebastian, known as Donostia in Basque.  We had initially wondered why our limited Spanish was even more off the mark than usual before we remembered that we are now in Basque country.

On arriving at Donostia station, we noticed that the station cafe tapas stacked up on display was quite unlike our English railway station sandwiches.  They were so tempting that we stopped and sampled some before heading off into town. They tasted every bit as fresh and delicious as they looked.

On the train journey and driving around this area we have been surprised that many of the houses are in the chalet style.  With long sloping roofs and wooden fascia boards they are far removed from the white Spanish houses we've been used to seeing and more like Swiss cuckoo clocks.

Donestia has just about everything going for it.  It is a vibrant and busy modern city which has the added attraction of  enormous beach as well as many architecturally interesting buildings.

One fascinating example of love it or hate it architecture is the Real Club Nautico designed by José Manuel Aizpurua and Joaquín Labayen. It is in the shape of a ship.

Again, the sun was shining on us and we had the most wonderful day exploring both the city and the beach front of Donestia.  It's a great place.
