Our plan was to leave Monconfa yesterday morning and move further down the coast to our next stop, La Manga del Mar Menor. However, since our lovely cycle in the sunshine on Wednesday, it has done nothing but pour down with rain. The rain has been torrential and has been accompanied by very strong winds; not ideal weather for driving a couple of hundred miles towing a caravan in so have decided to wait out the storm. It has disabled all the internet connection in the area and we are told that prolonged bad weather like this is quite unprecedented in this area.
Hoping that we’ll be able to get away tomorrow, weather willing, we drove into town and bought a Michelin map of Spain and Portugal. Angela has long complained that the large scale map of Europe we carry is just not good enough for navigation, so we decided to splash out. It really looks like it will do the job as it is not too unwieldy to handle in the car because of the pull-out design of the pages. After buying the map we revisited the bar we had seen a couple of nights ago which was closed at that time. Los Pinos had been recommended to us because of its great atmosphere. It didn’t disappoint and we spent a wonderful couple of hours enjoying tapas (Roland just had to try the pigs trotters, much to Angela’s disgust as he sucked the gravy from between the toes!). The bar is owned by a prize winning bull fighter and there’s lots of memorabilia on all the walls, including a huge display of rosettes. We were even given a display of cape work by an erstwhile bullfighter who was drinking at the bar. The girl behind the bar was an excellent host and she decided that she must introduce us to the local Cartegena speciality drink called Asiatico, consisting of condensed milk, brandy, Licor 43, expresso, cinnamon, lemon rind and some coffee beans. The drink is served layered, with the condensed milk at the bottom. Of course we had no idea what it was and drank it as is, in layers, but it would probably have tasted better stirred…or maybe not
