We left Vilanova yesterday and continued our journey southwest along the Spanish coast to our next strop, Camping Monmar in Moncofa on the Costa del Azahar. Unfortunately Angela had a migraine this morning so only Roland went out with the rally cycle group to Mascarell, a short 8km ride through some of the many orange groves in the area. Farmers are very happy for pedestrians and cyclists to pick oranges to eat as they go along, but not to take oranges home. The small medieval town of Mascarell is not very pretty but is renowned for being the only completely walled town in Valencia. It was once inhabited by the Moors before they were expelled.
Today was market day in Mascarell and there was an array of stalls selling the usual mix of clothes, vegetables and bric-a-brac. Roland decided that he would order some churros from a stall. He watched people order, and a small boy asked for 3 and paid a small amount and got 3 sticks in return. Roland decided to ask for 6 (3 for Angela back at the campsite and 3 for himself). He duly handed over a €10 note but received €4 in change and a ridiculously huge bag containing €6 worth of churros! After this foray Roland decided to stick to what he knew best and went to a bar to order “una cerveza”.
The group then decided to cycle the back into the centre of Moncofa for coffee and a snack. Like most towns along the coast here abouts the town is split in two distinct parts: the coastal area and the town proper urbanisation a few kilometres inland.
After a few coffees/beers Roland cycled back to camp and tried to convince Angela that half a hundredweight of churros would be a good cure for her headache.
