We cycled into Calvisson as today is market day. Calvisson is just over 4km along the cycle path from Congenies. What’s great about the local markets in France is that they are still so well supported. There seems to be the same kind of buzz that there used to be years ago at English markets. The stalls are buzzing and doing a good trade, the cafes and bars are full of families, notably, men as well as women and children, for whom market day is an event and an opportunity to meet up with friends.
The thing that was particularly special about this market day for us was that we also bumped into people we knew. We saw one of the local Quakers (an Irish woman who has settled in France, called Jacqueline) who was sitting outside a café having her petit-déjeuner . We walked over and had a chat and then joined her for coffee. Shortly afterwards, another Friend we knew, this time a Belgian who has settled in France, stopped by for a chat. We wandered around the market and the small town and were about to leave when we bumped into Judy and Dave who run the Quaker Centre we are camping at. It is so very nice to bump into friends, even if you’ve only just got to know them. We so miss our friends at home but everyone here has been so friendly and welcoming it helps you to forget all the madness that’s going on in the world and gives you hope.
