Monday 14th November - Avignon, France

Today did not start well.  We got in the car to go to Avignon and Angela noticed a piece of paper amongst the leaves on the windscreen.  When Roland went to investigate, he found a parking ticket from Uzes last Thursday.  It was almost out of sight, tucked under the wiper blade, so it’s no wonder we didn’t notice it and also pretty amazing that it hadn’t come off on the motorway.  Roland was extremely upset about getting a fine because we had bought a parking ticket from a meter and displayed it in the window.  Parking seems to be cheaper anywhere in Europe than it is in England but, to add insult to injury, the parking in Uzes was the most expensive to date.  Roland even commented at the time that maybe we should stay for another hour just to use up the time and get our money’s worth!  The injustice of the ticket incensed Roland and he was seriously considering taking up his cause with the local police, the mayor or anyone else who would listen.  Angela just wanted to pay it and forget about it but this was easier said than done as no-one seemed to know how to go about buying the fiscal stamps required to pay it.

We went to Avignon anyway, still grumbling and muttering to ourselves, and when we arrived we took ages to find a parking space so even more muttering followed.  Needless to say, we weren’t exactly in the mood to do any dancing on the bridge, but we did take a few photos.

When we got back to base, Kath and Bob had arrived to collect their caravan.  They are an English couple who live in the Auvergne.  They were staying here a couple of weeks ago but had to leave their caravan behind as there was a great storm and high winds the day they left.  We were invited to join Kath, Bob, Judy and Dave for dinner and what a great evening we had.  After a wonderful meal, Dave played the piano and we all had a really good sing-a-long until way past one in the morning.  It was just the thing to chase away the blues.
