In our terms it was going to be a long haul to Njivice, as we had made it a rule that we would only travel 100-150 miles in one go. Not just because of the strain on the driver, but because our objective is the journey across Europe and to experience as many places as possible. Having made the mistake in the past of just trusting TomTom we now do a check on google maps, TomTom and a map to check out the terrain ahead, and a good thing we did. Both TomTom and Google Maps decided that we should take a shortcut down a mountainside. Admittedly it was two minutes quicker, but as it was also 60 km shorter and we figured that there had to be some trade off. An aerial view on Google maps told us that it would be a great view, but not one that Angela relished, she has seen enough of the palms of her hands.
As it turned out the journey we eventually did take was pretty uneventful apart from the torrential rain over the last part of the journey, the bit where one needs to pay real attention. It is uncanny how often this has happened to us. Still the good progress we made was again down to some superb motorways. We don’t feel so bad paying the tolls (which are expensive) as we can see where the money has been spent. We do worry about the vast tracks of empty land the motorways traverse, it seems such a waste.
Anyway we arrived on Krk one of the largest islands (it used to be the largest until someone bothered to check the second largest and found they had the same area – perhaps Krk should ask for a recount). The entrance to Krk is, not surprisingly, via a bridge, the toll being 40 Kn (approx. €5.50). We later found out that the return journey is free.
We are now out of season but the campsites are still all pretty full, at least the good ones are. Indeed when we booked for Njivice, about 3 weeks ago, there were only 3 pitches available. Because of the joys of ACSI we get a pitch out of season at a much reduced rate. We were even offered a premium pitch at the standard reduced rate, so yet again we have a great sea view. The beach is if anything slightly nearer to our pitch than in Stobrec.
After we had set down and settled in we put the chairs and table out for a well-earned beer and glass of wine and sat back and watched our first sunset on Krk.
