Friday 30th September - Venice and Murano

We caught the 08:30 bus from the main street near our campsite to Punto Sabbioni where we caught a ferry that would take us directly to Piazza San Marco.  We had heard so much about Venice that we weren't really sure what to expect, but as soon as we boarded the ferry Angela started to get very excited with big beaming smile across her face.  Entering Venice by boat was an extra special experience and Angela’s grin got even wider.  The boat took about 45 minutes and we alighted in Venice to some really warm sunny weather.  We were out of season so the crowds were not as bad as we expected.  However, we still had to join an enormously long, but blessed fast moving, queue to enter the Basilica di San Marco.  The wait was worth it. The outside of the Basilica is breath taking, but it is exceeded by the interior.  It was free entry to the Basilica which surprised us, given the queues, however, one had to pay for views of the treasury and again for the alter piece, but the fees were minimal.

In the late afternoon we took a vaporetto to the island of Murano, the home of Venetian glass. Whilst Angela visited the Glass Museum, Roland had a couple of beers in bar and got chatting to a Canadian guy who knows Guildford quite well (random fact).  Angela spent a long time browsing glass shops but fortunately, due to us being on the road for another nine months, she wasn’t able to buy anything she thought she could transport safely (a considerable saving).

What can we say about Venice?  It was a brilliant experience, and one that will be remembered for some time.  And how could we round off the day?  Well why not a huge freshly baked pizza from our campsite pizzeria eaten whilst watching the sunset over the sea.
