Wednesday 31st August - Cesky Krumlov to Vienna

We didn’t learn any Czech whilst we visited the country.  We had our trusty phrase book ready but English is spoken widely and well.  We noticed quite a few road signs saying “Pozor!”which seemed important so we asked what it meant.  Apparently, it means “Watch out!”, but it doesn’t specify what for.  Anyway, it’s a pretty good word because even when we didn’t know what it meant we did watch out whenever we saw it.

We had just entered Austria on our way from Cesky Krumlov to Vienna when, following the sat nav, we took an exit that we weren’t expecting.  We were not relying entirely on sat. nav. but the turn came too quickly to make an informed decision.  It was a small road but not a bad one initially, and we could see that it was a route linking the road we had been on and the one we wanted to join. However, very soon the road became little more than a track through some woods and, coming out the other side we decided there was nothing for it but to turn around now rather than suffer another three or four miles on the narrow and bumpy road.  We found a potential place to manoeuvre a turn around, just outside a remote farmhouse.  Luckily, it must be the only remote farmhouse without a dog!  I got out to see Roland back as he reversed the caravan up.  It was then that I noticed that the front of the pop up roof of the caravan was up. We obviously hadn’t clipped it down before we set off.  If we hadn’t made the navigation error we’d never have known and, once we were on the motorway, the roof would soon have ripped off.  As they say, it’s an ill wind that blows nobody any good.  We were soon back on the right road again, roof securely locked down.
