Sunday 29th January - Cadiz

Today we decided to visit Cadiz as it is only a short drive of 25 miles from the campsite.   It was a very sunny day and this always helps to let one see a city at its best.  Cadiz lies on a long strip of land and encloses a large harbour area.   It is said to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in Spain and is still a large sea port and home to the Spanish Navy.

We were given a tour of Cadiz via the Camera Obscurer and shown how to identify the different styles of watch towers, of which there are still 126 across the city of Cadiz alone.  These were used to transmit messages about ships accessing the port.

Sea Urchins on sale - Abreu Calle Street Market

We wandered around the street market but we weren’t tempted by what was on offer, although we were curious at how to prepare and eat sea urchins.  They may be eaten raw and are frequently eaten alive, and as with oysters, don’t taste of fish but mostly of sea water – we didn’t try any.
