Today we decided that we would dust off the bikes and go on a short cycle ride. Our base in Congenies is situated mid way along a voie verte (green way) that runs the 21km from Sommieres to Caveirac . It is essentially a tarmacked route that is closed to motor vehicles, akin to what we would call a cycle path with the exception that it is used extensively by all non-motor uses i.e. cyclists, pedestrians, roller-bladers, joggers, runners etc. The route is well marked with signposts every so often giving distances to various points. The access point for the voie verte in Congenies is conveniently placed next to the local patisserie that serves coffee and the most delicious cakes and pastries. After we had sampled the delights of the patisserie we decided that we would set off on our bikes for the next village, Calvisson. The countryside all along the voie verte is beautiful and there are several picnic spots and lots of benches to rest on and take in the stunning views. It was an easy ride, and all to soon we arrived in Calvission, but unfortunately we hadn’t realised that today is All Saints Day and therefore a public holiday. This accounted for the number of families on the route. We only discovered that it was a public holiday when we got to Calvisson and everything was closed, but it looks like a very nice place so we will come again (and we’ll remember to take the camera next time too).
