There is a Quaker Retreat taking place at the Quaker Centre this weekend, with people arriving from 4:30 pm this afternoon and staying until Sunday evening. The theme for the Retreat is “How to be Fully Awake”. We noticed on the programme that there will be time to ‘walk the labyrinth’ and wondered where this labyrinth could be. As we discovered this morning, it was yet to be laid out. Dennis, one of the local Quakers, arrived early, armed with a detailed diagram, some cord, a tape measure and several bags of potting compost. Under his instruction, Roland and Dave marked out the labyrinth on the lawn. The beauty of this is that once the weekend is over, one mowing will see the lines of compost scattered and mown into the law and everything back as it was.
As the retreat is all conducted in French, we have only booked into the the meals and attended the Meetings for Worship and Epilogues. It wasn’t that we weren’t prepared to try and understand what was being stand,or to try and make ourselves understood. We simply didn’t want to spoil the event for the French attendees by becoming the focus or centre of attention. We were made very welcome at the meals and Friends ensured we were included in the conversations that were going around the table by translating for us. There were about 22 people attending.
