Tuesday 4th October - Sirmione

As it’s such a sunny day, we headed off on our bikes to explore the area around our campsite.  We chose this campsite, Camping Village San Francesco, because of it’s location on Lake Garda and the excellent public transport links with Verona (thanks for yet another great recommendation, Rosemary).  When we set off on our bikes we had envisioned a day cycling along the lakeside but were surprised to find the buzzing town of Sirmione almost on our doorstep.  Sirmione is on a long peninsula heading into Lake Garda and seems to be a mecca that attracts bus loads of tourists every day.  About half way along the peninsula is the imposing medieval Scaliger Castle.  At the far end of the peninsula there’s an archaeological site, Grotte di Catullo; excavated ruins of a private dwelling dating from the first century AD.  This was well worth the visit.  There are many restaurants and bars and a very lively atmosphere, although we wouldn’t fancy a trip here in high season if the crowds in October are anything to go by.
Unfortunately, we didn’t take our camera with us so the photos, taken on our mobiles, are not great quality shots.

Having found Sirmione, we only cycled 12/15km today, being happy to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy our surroundings.  We liked Sirmione a lot and could happily live here in the off season.
