We were originally going to make Rome our next stop but decided that whist we were in the travelling mood we’d head right down to Pompeii today and catch Rome when we drive back up through Italy. At 290 miles it was the longest journey so far. The roads and weather were good and the journey uneventful. Once we arrived in Pompeii, we came out of a junction and had to cross a busy road. Of course, no one stopped to let us out and the traffic was constant in both directions. Roland kept edging the car further and further out into the road but everyone just drove around us. Soon the bus behind us started blasting on his horn as well – welcome to Pompeii!
Our campsite is called Camping Spartacus and is opposite the gates to the Pompeii ruins. The location is also perfect for trips out to Sorrento, the Amalfi coast and Herculaneum. It seems that the campsites in Pompeii, and there are quite a few, sell the camping spaces in the daytime as parking spaces for those visiting the ruins. This didn’t bother us as we were out most of the time, but it would have made it a difficult location to relax in during the daytime, as many of the reviewers noted in their comments. One morning we had a late breakfast outside and it was like being on the M1. However, people have to make money and the staff were extremely friendly and obliging and the camping was cheap. There is also a large Carrefour supermarket just ten minutes walk away, which is very handy.
Having had a long day on the road we treated ourselves to dinner out at the Pantheon Restaurant and had lots of lovely local meats and cheeses, salad and rosemary and olive oil flat bread. Yummy. The weather had turned to nasty rain on our walk back from dinner, so we stopped off at the shop and picked up some chocolate puddings on the way home to cheer us up.
A long and tiring day but a good day.
