Monday 17th October–Rome (day 2)

We set off very early for a full day in Rome.  As it’s a week day, the camp doesn’t run a shuttle bus to the station because the public bus service is running from just up the road.  There is a bus timetable but this doesn’t seem to relate in any way at all to the time you should expect a bus to arrive.  We also bought a full day metro travel ticket as we needed to get around more quickly today.  Usually, we prefer to be above ground, walking and taking in the sights and sounds, but Rome is a big city with a seemingly infinite number of interesting things to see and do and our time is limited.  Having experienced the Italian local trains, we wondered what the metro would be like but it turned out to be clean and efficient – hoorah!

We were staggered by the physical size of the amphitheatre in Verona, but this in no way prepared us for the impact of the Coliseum in Rome.  Our early start meant we’d beaten the crowds and within twenty minutes had bought our tickets and audio guides and were doing our tour with elbow room to spare.  Needless to say, it is simply amazing.

We had a full day sight seeing, taking a break for a late but long lunch and people watch from the Grand Caffe Roma, in the Piazza d'Aracoeli.
